What does Palliative Care include?

Palliative care is care that’s meant to make the patient comfortable and improve their quality of life. Our Houston palliative care team focuses on reducing the patient’s pain and managing symptoms of their illness or side effects of medication. In addition to addressing medical needs, palliative care addresses the individual’s social, emotional, and spiritual needs. While palliative care does not focus on curing the patient of illness, it can be provided alongside curative treatment, or without it.

Hospice care is a type of palliative care that’s provided towards the end of a person’s life, when curative treatments are either no longer an option or no longer preferred. Patients who enter a hospice program typically do so around the last six months of their life. While this type of care is often associated with cancer patients, it can be provided to anyone living with a terminal illness. At Bayou City Hospice in Houston, we provide hospice services wherever the patient calls home. Hospice patients are provided with necessary resources like medications, medical equipment, healthcare supplies, and a team of palliative care professionals to provide as much care as needed.

Our Treatment and Care Options

Bayou City Hospice offers Houston area residents a variety of hospice and palliative care services. The option that is best for your loved one will depend on their specific needs.

Routine hospice home care includes scheduled and on-call visits by our Houston care professionals up to seven days per week. Routine visits allow our staff to manage symptoms, help prevent crises, and provide holistic care to keep the patient as comfortable as possible.

Continuous care is short-term, at-home care that’s provided when regular visits aren’t enough to control your loved one’s symptoms. Houston nurses or home health aides will remain in the home for up to 24 hours per day, depending on the needs of the patient.

General inpatient care is temporary care provided in a Houston hospital or nursing facility when your loved one’s symptoms can’t be properly managed at home. Our goal during this type of care is to stabilize the patient’s condition so the patient can return home.

Respite care allows a home patient to stay at a Houston nursing facility or hospice inpatient unit for up to five days so their family can take a break from caregiving responsibilities or go to out-of-town events.
